Cartridge Refilling & Care
What are the advantages of a refilled cartridge?
+
You save money on your cartridge purchase AND it is good for the environment since you get to reuse your cartridge. With our machine-controlled fill process and your own well-cared for cartridge, you will get excellent quality for less than buying a new cartridge.
When should I refill a cartridge?
+
We recommend that you refill your cartridge as soon as you see the print quality begin to degrade. Continuing to print a cartridge that is running dry will damage it or the built-in printhead.
How many times can I refill a cartridge?
+
Print cartridges can deliver excellent quality long after they first run out of ink. Customers can achieve multiple refills on a well-maintained integrated cartridge before deciding to replace it with a new one. Most tank-based cartridges can be typically refilled up to 15 times until it leaks or exhibits damage.
What is the proper way to handle a cartridge?
+
As soon as you remove the cartridge from your printer, place it into the plastic clip, provided after initial refill. This will protect the cartridge and prevent it from drying out. If you do not have the clip, place 1 to 3 cartridges in a letter sized envelope, be careful not to rub print heads together when transporting. Keep in cool place. Bring in for refilling as soon as possible. Never touch, clean or place tape over the print head nozzles.
Refill Quality
How do I know that the cartridge will work in my printer?
+
Our refill center tests your cartridge and verifies that ink is flowing through the nozzles correctly.
Will I get the same level of quality as I do when buying a new cartridge?
+
Yes, the results you will get from a refilled cartridge will closely match original manufacturers (OEM). For most consumers, there will be no significant difference in everyday printing quality. Refilling your cartridge is an easy and cost effective way of supplying your printer with ink. Whether printing with new or refilled cartridges, always use inkjet specific paper whenever printing photos.
Is the ink the same quality as an original HP, Epson, Canon or Brother cartridge?
+
Ink quality does make a difference in your print quality, that’s why we do not use Universal Ink in our refill solution. We use cartridge specific ink to match OEM (original manufacturer) colors and to ensure the highest possible output quality for each cartridge type.
What if there is a problem with my cartridge and it can’t be refilled?
+
We recommend that you purchase a new OEM cartridge and bring it in for a refill the next time you run out of ink.
What makes a cartridge non-refillable?
+
Most commonly, cartridges cannot be refilled when their internal components become too dry and/or clogged. Print head damage also can be caused by printing after the cartridge runs dry. Physical and electrical damage may also prohibit a successful refill.
Cartridge Refill Service
How do I use the service?
+
Simply drop off your empty inkjet cartridge at Costco Photo-Lab. Costco will refill the empty cartridge and will return it to you, generally in about one hour.
How does Costco's inkjet refill service differ from other refilling solutions?
+
Costco does not exchange cartridges, nor do we refill them with Universal Ink. Instead, we refill and return the same cartridge, and use cartridge-specific ink to match OEM colours. Our machine-controlled processes ensure the highest refill quality and number of pages printed from each refill. The refilled cartridges are tested to validate print quality standards have been met. If you are not satisfied with the results, we will repeat the procedure or refund your money.
What types of inkjet cartridges does Costco refill and how much does it cost?
+
HP/Canon/Epson/Brother – We currently refill select cartridges from the market leaders, in order to deliver our service to the greatest number of customers. If there is strong demand, we may add more cartridges to those we support. Prices range from £3.99 to £9.99, depending on cartridge and size. Please visit uk.costcoinkjetrefill.com/pricing to view supported cartridges and pricing.
How long does it take to refill a cartridge?
+
It typically takes less than an hour to refill a cartridge. We will give you a pick-up time based on service volume.
Why doesn't your service support my cartridge?
+
Others – In order to provide the lowest price possible, we are currently limiting our service to the cartridges that represent the majority of the market. Check back again, as we periodically add new cartridges to our supported list based on member demand or you may consider buying a refill friendly printer, which can cost about the same as replacing two older cartridges.
How much ink do I get in a refill?
+
We closely match and in most cases significantly exceed the amount of ink you get when you buy a new cartridge.
Can I refill my cartridge here even if I have already refilled it somewhere else?
+
As long as your cartridge is in good working order, we will make every attempt to refill it for you. NOTE: We do not refill non-OEM tank-based cartridges (i.e. non-genuine/original manufacturer ink cartridges found in 4, 5 and 6 ink-cartridge printer models).
Is there a recommended usage date for a refilled cartridge?
+
The refilled integrated cartridge should be used within 90 days of refill, tanks may be used within 1-year of refill and remain in the plastic clip/or cap attached until ready for use.
Do all Costco locations offer the inkjet refill service?
+
We intend to eventually offer the service in all UK Costco locations. Please visit uk.costcoinkjetrefill.com/locations for current locations offering this service.
Printer Issues & Warranty
Will using a refilled cartridge void my printer warranty?
+
No. National laws in most European countries prohibit any company from requiring you to purchase only their products and prohibits a manufacturer from voiding your machine's warranty simply by using alternative ink cartridge solutions.
What do I do if my printer displays a "Low on Ink" warning message?
+
Generally, you can ignore "Low On Ink" messages until you actually see the print quality begin to degrade. For tips to reset Low on Ink messages, visit the "Support" page at uk.costcoinkjetrefill.com/support or refer to the technical support site Inkjet411.com
What should I do if my printer displays a cartridge error message which prevents printing?
+
Some printers have trouble recognizing refilled cartridges; ‘Ink Low’ messages are normal with many refilled cartridges, simply bypass the alerts. Generally you can ignore most ‘low ink’ & ‘empty’ indicator messages until you actually see the print quality begin to degrade (NOTE: select Canon printers will need to be reset to enable refilled cartridge). For cartridge error messages which prevent printing, try cleaning the cartridge’s copper area, and the back of the printer’s cartridge insertion slots, i.e. where the copper printed circuits exist. What if there is a problem with my cartridge and it can’t be refilled?
+
We recommend that you purchase a new OEM cartridge and bring it in for a refill the next time you run out of ink.
